Will Smith's Bright 2 Movie Plans Reportedly Scrapped By Netflix.#netflix #Bright2
Plans for Bright 2 starring Will Smith have reportedly been scrapped by Netflix, though this update does not appear related to the Oscars incident.
Plans for Bright 2 starring Will Smith have reportedly been scrapped by Netflix. Bright was a Netflix original film released back in 2017. Helmed by Suicide Squad director David Ayer and penned by Max Landis, the film follows a detective (Smith) and his partner, who is an Orc (Joel Edgerton), as they work to find a powerful wand before the evil creatures which inhabit their version of Earth. While Bright was not particularly well received by industry reviewers, with only a 27% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, Bright proved a hit with general audiences, receiving an 83% audience score.
Due to its highly audience appeal, Netflix almost immediately green-lit Bright 2 in 2017, and the film has supposedly been in various states of preproduction since then. Screenwriter Landis had been confirmed to not be returning for Bright 2, given the various sexual harassment and assault allegations made against him in 2019. Instead, Ayer would be teaming up with Evan Spiliotopoulos, who penned Disney's live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. It is unknown exactly how much of the film had been completed in the five years since it was green-lit, however, it seems Bright 2 was not meant to be.
In a recent tweet from Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw, the reporter has revealed that Netflix has "abandoned" its plans for Bright 2. The news came while Shaw was sharing an article about Smith's National Geographic production being delayed after the now-infamous "Oscars slap" incident with Chris Rock. While Shaw has shared the news about Bright 2 as a footnote to this story, the reporter noted that Bright 2's cancellation is not related to Smith's Oscars slap. See his full tweet below:
It has yet to be revealed why exactly Bright 2 was cancelled. While a very large number of projects which were set to involve Smith have either been cancelled or delayed following the 2022 Oscars Night when Smith slapped Rock on live television, Netflix does not seem to have cited this as a reason for shelving the Bright sequel. Perhaps the streaming service was not happy with how far production had come since the film was originally confirmed. It is also possible that Bright 2 has found itself a casualty of Netflix's recent subscriber loss. However, until further details are confirmed, there is only speculation surrounding the film's cancellation.
Of course, there is still hope for a Bright 2. Just because the film has been scrapped for now does not mean that Netflix, or another studio, would not pick it up in future. Perhaps if those who have been waiting five years to revisit the world of Bright make themselves heard, Netflix will reconsider its decision. For now, however, Will Smith's Bright remains a standalone film, which audiences will have to re-watch if they wish to return to the version of L.A. where humans and fantasy creatures all live together.
