There are different road terminologies that some people use wrongly because they don't know the difference between them, however, in this article I'll be highlighting the difference between some common road terminologies;
1. Highway
Oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com defines a highway as a long stretch of road which connects a major city to another, they mostly consist of 4 lanes which have high-speed limits. Since they connect major cities these types of roads usually pass through rural areas.
2. Expressway
According to oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com, an expressway is a wide road that has various demarcated lanes which might have a service lane, these roads are usually targeted at fast-moving traffic, as they are built to ensure smooth movement of traffic as it makes provision for a dedicated lane for cars that are about to use an intersection or enter a street. The major purpose of this dedicated lane is so that cars that are about to use the intersection wouldn't hinder the other cars using the major lanes.
3. Freeway.
A freeway is a type of road that is void of any form of hindrance that will slow down a car or that will distract the driver, such hindrances include exit and entry lanes, toll booths and intersections.
4. Motorway
This is a type of road with fast-moving traffic which has a strict rule on the type of vehicles that are allowed to ply the road, this type of road usually has 3 or more lanes and some vehicles such as tricycles, trailers and bikes might be restricted from the road. These types of roads are mostly used in the UK.
4. Causeway
This is simply a road that is elevated to give cars access over wetlands, water marshlands or swamps.
5. Thruway
This is a type of toll road meant for all vehicles but sometimes requires large vehicles to pay a toll.
6. Parkway
