Mason Greenwood is the latest person in English football to be accused of alleged abuse of a woman, following Ryan Giggs and Benjamin Mendy in recent months. The Manchester United forward's case has highlighted a problem that exists within English football, and generally.
Greenwood's case is just the latest to emerge. The 20-year-old has been accused by Harriet Robson of violent abuse, and accusations of rape have also been made after the publishing of an audio recording. Robson posted photos and videos of injuries allegedly inflicted on her by Greenwood.
The pictures were disturbing and the audio was unsettling to say the least, in which the footballer appears to force Robson into having sex with him. United swiftly distanced themselves and said that the forward would not rejoin training, while his teammates unfollowed him on social media.
According to The Athletic, Nike have cut their ties with him as well.
The case isn't dissimilar to that of Benjamin Mendy, who has been accused of seven counts of rape and sexual assault against five women between October 2020 and August 2021.
Mendy had been in custody since August and was released on bail earlier this year, awaiting his June 27 trial when his guilt or innocence will be determined.
Ryan Giggs, Wales manager and ex-Manchester United player, is also awaiting trial after his November 2020 arrest. Then, a neighbour heard a loud argument and Giggs was accused of psychological abuse of his partner and attacking her sister.
The Welshman was removed temporarily from his position as coach of his country and is awaiting trial. His trial should have been held in January, but has been postponed until August due to a lack of available dates in court.
Things don't stop there either. An Everton player was arrested on suspicion of child sex offences and was suspended by the club.

The problem goes beyond footballers, but does exist within football. Around the European Championship, cases of domestic abuse increased after England's final loss against Italy. Ninety percent of the victims were women.
A study carried out by the University of Lancaster in 2013 showed that England losing or drawing a match led to an increase in cases as well. Wins or draws saw increases of 26 percent, while losses saw cases of male violence against women increase by as much as 38 percent.
The National Centre for Domestic Violence believe that these figures are "just the tip of the iceberg".
