Atletico Madrid sign Reinildo Mandava from Lille

Transfer deadline day saw Atletico Madrid strengthen in defence by signing left-back Reinildo Mandava from Lille.

The 28-year-old defender has featured in as many as 27 games this season, while he participated in all six of Lille's games in the Champions League group stage.

Reinildo came through Benfica's academy before joining Belenenses, but in January 2019 he made the leap to Ligue 1 to join Lille, initially on loan before they bought him for three million euros. Last season, he played an important in Lille's title-winning campaign.

Experience for Simeone
Diego Simeone now has an experienced left-back at his disposal, with Reinildo set to compete with Renan Lodi for a spot in the starting line-up and allow Yannick Carrasco to occupy a more attacking position on the pitch.

Reinildo's contract at Lille was set to end in June, and Atletico leaped at the opportunity to strengthen the left-back position.


The Mozambique international can play on the left flank both in a back four or a back five, although he feels more comfortable featuring at left-back than as a wing-back.

At Atletico, Reinildo will rejoin forces with his former teammate at Benfica, Joao Felix, who signed for Los Rojiblancos back in 2019.
