Why Liverpool decided on loan deal for 28-goal young striker

Paul Glatzel was on the cusp of Jurgen Klopp's first-team in 2019 but Liverpool have loaned him out following his recovery from injury

Why Liverpool decided on loan deal for 28-goal young striker
Liverpool U23’s coach Barry Lewtas has revealed why the club decided to send Paul Glatzel out on loan this summer.

The striker’s performances for the U18s earned him a call-up to Jurgen Klopp’s senior setup for pre-season in 2019, before suffering a long-term knee injury in a friendly against Tranmere Rovers.

In a quirk of fate, the striker is now set to spend the rest of the new season at Prenton Park, after recovering from his extensive rehab towards the end of last season.

It’s a welcome breakout opportunity for Glatzel, who looked to be on the edge of his first-team debut, after a 28-goal season for the academy side culminated in him lifting the FA Youth Cup in 2018/19.

Having returned to U23s action earlier this year, recording four goal involvements in the last four league games of the campaign, Lewtas outlined why Liverpool had opted to send him out on loan.

“Paul has had some real misfortune and sadly sometimes when we talk about him that seems to be the narrative really, which is really unfortunate for him”, he told the club website.

“There's no question he's played enough football to back up the quality that he's got, but he has missed a few games and had a few injury problems.

“Paul was ready for this next step, there's no question of that, both physically and mentally.”

After revealing the extent of his injury to Jurgen Klopp , the Liverpool boss requested that Glatzel complete his recovery at Melwood with the first-team, demonstrating how highly-regarded he is by the Reds coaching staff.

The 20-year-old striker, who has German parents, has played for both Germany and England at youth level and will be looking forward to making his mark for Tranmere in League Two.

Moving to a nearby club, Lewtas is also eager to keep a close eye on one of Liverpool ’s academy starlets, with Glatzel already starting all three of Rovers’ competitive games so far this season.

Lewtas added: “He's gone to a fantastic club in Tranmere Rovers, a local one as well, which is great for us because we are able to go down and support him and watch him play.

“We can all follow him with interest and I'm sure Paul is going to have a fantastic season, as I think Tranmere will as well.”
