#BuzzScreenReview: Mortal Kombat
All matters Mortal Kombat, the release was the champion at the box office this past weekend. According to reports, the film brought in $22.5 million, which all things considered seems like another win for Warner Brothers.
Disclaimer! If you ain't about blood and fights, might we suggest a look at some of the many movies we have already reviewed because if you ask me, this is a bloody and violent extravaganza that delivers what it promises!
Many of us who were lucky enough to own a computer as we grew up, had the chance to play Mortal Kombat was curious to see how this modern film adaptation of the beloved video game franchise would play out. To my surprise, Mortal Kombat delivers what it promises.
The actors ham it up and look as though they are having a blast. Sure, a few key characters are missing from the film, but with this already being set up as a multiple film series, we probably will get to see a whole lot of them on some level.
The plot serves its purpose in setting up the world, and while the story isn’t anything new (protectors of the earth), it works well enough to set up the future of the franchise.
However, the main reason to watch Mortal Kombat is for only one thing: the fight scenes.
Just in case you are still not up to speed, the video game Mortal Kombat is centred around people fighting to the death in a tournament. While there is no tournament in this film, there is exposition to the tournament and plenty of badass fight scenes to go around.
The film opens as the family idyll of warrior Hanzo Hasashi is interrupted by slaughter at the hands of rival assassin Bi-Han (Indonesian action star Joe Taslim). Those hands are mighty cold, and Hanzo's weapon of choice is a spear at the end of a rope if you catch my drift. After a spectacular fight sequence, the only survivor is an infant saved from death by the thunder god Raiden.
Flash forward to the present, and cage-fighting martial artist Cole Young is down on his luck. He also has a mysterious dragon-shaped birthmark. He's sought out by former Special Ops bruiser Jax Briggs, who saves Cole's family from Sub-Zero, a masked, cryokinetic ninja. He (Cole) learns that he's destined to fight in the ritual Mortal Kombat tournament between Earth and the sinister, extradimensional Outworld.
Cole and Jax are joined by other military badasses. Sonya Blade, grimy Australian merc Kano, fire-flinging kick machine Liu Kang and, master of weaponized haberdashery Kung Lao, in helping Raiden repel the forces of Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung once and for all.
Still not up to speed? Think of it this way, there are good karate guys and bad karate guys, and they're mad at each other; press play...Get it?
Each fight scene is expertly choreographed, so much so that everyone looks and feels different from the one before it. It is bloody, and violent which is what one would have hoped from a Mortal Kombat movie. (probably not for the kids).
