People all over the world were closely following the proceedings relating to the killing of Breonna Taylor, and unarmed 26-year-old woman who was shot by police in her apartment on May 13th. Police had allegedly suspected that a man who was under their investigation had sent a package to Breonna’s home, leading to their entering. On Wednesday, a jury indicated one officer, Brett Hankinson, on first-degree wanton endangerment of Taylor’s neighbours as he shot into the apartment. The other two police officers, however, were not charged.
The uproar was deafening. Stevie Wonder took to Twitter to lament on the matter amongst other pending issues in the USA. “Truth: No amount of money has ever brought a life back,” he commenced in reference to Taylor’s family, who had received 12 million dollars as compensation for a wrongful death suit that they won. Stevie wasn’t done;
“Where’s our love for each other? Where’s our love for our country? Where is the love that will make us do what is right?” He became particularly emotional as he spoke about “innocent loves that have been taken”. Wonder, who has been a consistent critic of Donald Trump, went on to urge people to vote. “We just can’t put November in the hands of fate, but we can put it in our hands,” he spoke. “The universe is still watching us and now Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is watching us too.” He concluded powerfully by, “So please, let’s do life. It is worth living and loving and being together.”#BlackLivesMatter
