“I Used To Be A Truck Driver, Trying To Survive” – Do You Know Nyashinski’s Full US Story?

Kenyan mega-artist, Nyamari Ongegu, popular known by his stage name, Nyashinski, has had the taste of both the world of fame and that of an unknown loner. Back in 06, the rapper was on his way up as a local artist and had seemingly outgrown the Kleptomaniacs. However, it was at this time that the rapper decided to move to the States where he spent 10 years of his life. For the first two years there, Nyashinski was a truck driver in Delaware before moving to Michigan.

“When we moved abroad, I had completely quit music. I was working… as a truck driver,” he narrated on episode one of his life series on his YouTube channel. He insists that the experience of driving to survive taught him two things that were “life-changing”. “…one, when I was here, I was a star. People recognized me everywhere and we were doing what we loved. I moved from a place where I was known and getting a bit of favours here and there to a place where no one knows me. No special treatment and you must work because you have to eat.”

The second lesson was that of having company. “…I was used to having people around me to a lonely life of a truck driver,” he stated. He painted the picture of being alone on the road for 16 odd hours, only stopping for gas, sleep and bathroom breaks. “So you find yourself enjoying small conversations with people you meet for five minutes. At least it was away from that cage.”

Shinski said that despite the hustles, he enjoyed living a normal life. He could walk on the roads, in a mall and be normal. He attributed the reason for his return to the need to tap into his intelligence and passion, something that the truck driver job wasn’t offering. “So back in the states, my friend told me to just go in studio and exert that pressure as a lyricist. I did not have to release the songs, but I found myself listening to a beat, creating a song and then wanting to perfect it and then I want people to listen.” Thus, he returned home and dove right back into the music arena.

Since his return, Nyashinski has been at the peak of the game and his hits have been nothing but cutting edge. His album, ‘Lucky You’, is the highlight of this return.
