Did The VMAs Just Do The Greatest Omission Of All Time?!
The MTV Video Music Awards is one of the most renowned awards ceremony of our time. The 37th annual anniversary was hosted by Kiki Palmer on the 31st of August 2020 and despite being the first of its kind as a result of the pandemic, it still featured electrifying performances from artists such as Doja Cat and BTS. However, other than the awarding ceremony itself, one segment in particular really drew people’s attention… and many were very, very displeased.
During the event, the “In Memoriam” segment was broadcasted, featuring the likes of Juice WRLD, Pop Smoke and Chadwick Boseman, celebrities that had lost their lives over the past year. However, one person, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, was missing from the screens and the outcry was enormous! "Who at the #VMAs forgot to include Kobe Bryant in the In Memoriam section?!? You added Naya and Chadwick, you weren't sticking to just music," one user wrote on Twitter. Another one posted, "How DARE you guys Not pay tribute to KOBE BRYANT!!!! He is an Academy Award winner and Legend!!! And you choose to leave him out of your 2020 tribute!"
Kobe and 8 others lost their lives back in January when a helicopter they were on crashed into a gorge after the pilot lost control. He had been active for 20 years as a professional basketball player at the Los Angeles Lakers, 1996-2016, and had scooped up several personal and team trophies during this period. More so, he had become an icon in people’s lives, with the “Mamba Mentality” mantra that he had created.
Kobe was a true inspiration both on an off the court and his demise was mourned by millions the world over. It is thus understandable why people were so agitated by the omission from the segment. MTV hasn’t responded to people’s complaints yet.
